Backhoe loaders are very common and can be used for a variety of tasks: construction, small demolition, light construction material transport, powering construction equipment, digging holes/excavations, landscaping, breaking up asphalt and paving roads. Often, the bucket of a backhoe can also be replaced by a powered attachment, such as a crusher, grapple, auger or stump grinder. Enhanced attachment articulation can be achieved with intermediate attachments, such as a tiller. Many backhoes feature quick coupler (quick connect) mounting systems and auxiliary hydraulic circuits to simplify attachment installation and improve machine availability on the job site. Some loader buckets have a retractable bottom or "clamshell" that allows them to empty the load more quickly and efficiently. Loader buckets with retractable bottoms are also often used for leveling and scraping. The front assembly may be a removable attachment or permanently mounted.
